‘I just left there:’ Army veterans react to Fort Stewart shooting

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – Veterans across Georgia expressed shock and sadness after an Army sergeant opened fire at Fort Stewart on Wednesday, shooting five soldiers and prompting a brief lockdown.
“My initial reaction was shock. I just left there. I know so many people still at Fort Stewart,” said Army veteran Justin Howe.

Howe, who now lives in Rabun County, had been stationed at Fort Stewart since 2019.
After he retired last year in October, he worked as a civilian on base until May of this year.
Even though he’s no longer there, he still received a shelter-in-place alert during the shooting.
“I immediately called my wife and let her know what’s going on and then I called my friends who are still stationed down there,” Howe said.
The suspected shooter was identified by a U.S. official as logistics Sgt. Quornelius Radford, 28.
